Review: Bob ✭✭✭✭✭

Bob Bob by Wendy Mass
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Free up your schedule for an hour or two and read this treasure of a book by Wendy Mass and Rebecca Stead and illustrated by Nicholas Gannon. This collaboration resulted in a sweet, magical novel! Eleven year old Livy, her mom and baby sister make the long journey to Australia to visit Livy's grandmother. Livy is concentrating and trying hard to remember something very important that happened on her last visit five years earlier. Turns out, what she is can't quite recall is that she made a friend named Bob, a pudgy "green" zombie in a chicken suit living in the closet. Bob is thrilled to reunite with Livy. But will Bob remain living alone in the closet after she leaves? And will Livy overcome her separation anxiety when her Mom leaves her with Gran for several days?

Your reader will laugh and cry as they progress through the short chapters alternately narrated by Bob and Livy. Bob has quite a sense of humor considering he's spent five years in a closet. Fans of ET, Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate, Cursed by Bruce Coville or The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo will love this quick read as much as I did. Take the time to really study the beautiful illustrations too! There's one special detail in the last illustration of Livy.
