Fascinating Non-Fiction About the Whaling Industry ✩✩✩

This compelling peek into the lives of African American sailors on whaling ships is written by Patricia and Fredrick McKissack, a wife and husband team who have multiple book awards to their credit. The reader of Black Hands, White Sails will gain extensive knowledge about the business of whaling, and the lives that were affected by it. Some American whaling ships and crew had an important role in the running of the Underground Railroad. This book also delves into the history of some of the more infamous whaling shipwrecks and mutinous disasters.

Primary source materials such as photos, sea shanties, and journal entries are included. You may know that "on an even keel" is a sailing expression. But did you know that "ringleader" and "hand over fist" are also sailing idioms? Fast fact: the expression "there she blows" was originally "there blows"!
